Working of a propane generator
The prime purpose of a propane generator is to produce electricity. In a propane-powered generator, electricity is produced by the conversion of motorized power which comes from the combustion of propane into electrical energy. A propane generator uses propane as fuel in order to generate electricity. The combustion of propane that produces energy is converted into electricity by propane generators.
It has specialized carburetors that are used for burning propane. Inside the generator, there is a proportionate mix of water and ammonia. When the generator is turned on, heat is generated within it which is produced from the burning of propane. Consequently, the temperature of the mixture of ammonia and water reaches its boiling point and ammonia gas is produced due to this which ammonia gas further flows through the generator.
The detailed working of a propane-powered generator
- In a process called magnetic induction, a copper wire passes through a magnetic field and voltage is produced. In case this wire is connected to a circuit, this power can be transmitted. Alternators present in a generator have two components, stators and rotors.
- A stator has copper coils rounded into the alternator’s outer casing. The rotor also has the same feature but unlike a stator, it is connected to the shaft of the engine which thereby rotates it. When voltage is passed through the roar coil, an electromagnetic field is created. This process further generates a voltage.
- Owing to the reason for fluctuation in the magnetic field, the voltage also fluctuates accordingly. In ideal situations, voltage levels should be consistent so that a continuous supply of power can be ensured.
- In order to do so an ultimatum voltage regulator is used which regulates the voltage and the magnetic field to cope up with the demand for power.
In the case of propane-powered generators, the sources can be connected in series when there is a need for high voltage applications and in parallels when there is a need for low voltage applications.
Types of propane-powered generators
Propane-powered generators are primarily of four types:-
- Portable generators– A portable propane generator is used when there is a need for electricity for a short amount of time. It may range up to a few hours. They are smaller in size.
- Standby generators– Standby propane generators are larger as compared to portable propane generators. They are put into the application when electricity is needed to be provided for several days. In standby propane generators propane is usually stored underground in storage tanks in the case of standby generators.
- Automatic generators– There are certain standby propane generators that come up with a transfer switch that is designed in such a manner that it automatically turns on when the power goes out. It also automatically turns off when the power is back.
- Manual generators– There are certain portable and standby propane generators that are needed to be manually turned on and off depending on the need.
